Personal problem counselors may be licensed doctors in psychiatry or psychology, or they may be licensed therapists. Some personal problem counselors are not licensed professionals, but believe their own personal experiences and knowledge can help people work past their personal problems. Many times a personal problem counselor may be contacted if a person is suffering from an alcohol or drug dependency, or if they are suffering from an eating disorder such as anorexia. Many personal problem counselors specialize in specific problems or age groups, such as young adults or adolescents, because of the unique problems they may have with self-esteem and other common issues.
